mouth cancer radiation therapy – CLINAC – clinical linear accelerator

my friend, a 40 years old man, is undergoing radiation therapy for mouth cancer that was caused by smoking tobacco. this video shows the CLINAC in operation, irradiating the patient’s mouth / neck area. for more details not only about this very radiation treatment and the isodose chart, but also about the story in general, see my flickr photostream: www.flickr.com ps: the video quality is a little low, as i recorded this video in 320×200 resolution to have 30 frames per second… instead of just 20 frames per second in higher resolution. i hoped to get more visible CCD flashes / high-energy photon strikes like that. @bionerd23 If only you had a linac at your home

  • bionerd23:

the mask as well as many more pictures are on my flickr photostream, anyway; the link is on my youtube channel page. just search for mouth cancer on my flickr, and you’ll find them.

  • Dembadomba:

ok no video.. ive seen one now.

  • Dembadomba:

do he shake or is it something else? it looks scary… man i aint going to smoke. or try it. plzz make a vid about that “mask”.. wanna take a look.

  • bionerd23:

yeah, of course. 6000 in one shot would cause his face to die off.

  • sanitary103:

its fractionated over a period of 5-6 weeks typically; not 6000 in one shot

  • bionerd23:

not too good; he had to undergo chemotherapy in combination with this radiotherapy, but the cancer seems to have come back (he’s got a lump / mass on his neck). he’s currently not getting it treated, though; guess he’s sick of all those treatments… however, he goes to check-ups, which is good.

How is your friend (the cancer patient) doing at this point?

  • bionerd23:

    happy birthday, now you’re as old as i am… :P ;)
…and good luck with quitting smoking!!

  • KarbineKyle:

5/5! I smoke, and I’m into radiation (studying it, that is), and I do know that in nature, Po-210 and Pb-210 atoms have been known to attach themselves to the fibers on tobacco leaves. I’ve heard of this a long time ago, but radioactive isotopes are capable of many strange behaviors… It’s hard to quit smoking… The best way is to NEVER START! I should really take this seriously! Today is my 26th Birthday. Right now actually, 1:00 PM! I need to quit smoking! Thanks Bionerd23!

There is no radiation when its rotating:)

  • Zardas11:

    thank you.

  • bionerd23:

i’m sure the doctors know what they’re doing, and are not putting her at unnecessary risk with the therapy. good luck to your mum!

    @bionerd23

Ok thx im watching this because my 43 yr old mom is under going radtion theropy i hope shes ok…

  • bionerd23:

wikipedia is always a good start… or get some books from the library, very good start, too.

  • Zardas11:

i would like to learn more about radiation in general, any good sites to suggest or have any pointers?

  • bionerd23:

as a full body dose, about 400 rad can be lethal already. however, this is NOT a full body dose; the patient receives the absolute majority of radiation bundled onto his mouth and neck area.

  • Jaythre:

    6000 Rads????

I thaught that 1000 reds was LETHAL

  • Zardas11:

    Love your vids

(i couldnt help but feel like it was a rave)

  • bionerd23:

yeah, i noticed that, too – well, i still hope it’s accurate enough to do its job… this machine seems to be from 198X something though, maybe that has to do with it.

  • JayandJenn07:

I do agree about the beauties in this technology, but I am kinda surprised at how jerky the rotation is. I operate and Program CNC Mills and Lathes, and the accuracy they MUST have is in the .00005 of an inch. the human hair is .005, But those machines have an average cost of about 100k and i can safely assume this machine is well over a 1mill. It would just make since to me to have the same quality of axial rotation as My machines.
The photons cam was crazy. wouldn’t want to be in their.

  • coilgunman:

    yes!!!! today arrive my gamma-scout

and congratulations for your videos are very interesting, you are my idol

  • bionerd23:

they were not really “important”, they just tell what everybody should, in theory, know… or at least is in the description, anyway. you could press pause to read it, though. :)

as a sidenote, this patient is german. not that it matters much, but, well.

  • cyclenut:

Yes, tabocco and smoking is BAD!
You flashed important information that I could not read.
This must not be America, 40 and not obese.
    Bionerd23, your are so cool!

  • bionerd23:

well, the red lights actually tell info about the rotation of the linear accelerator itself, collimator, gantry, etc. – but they do always turn off when the radiation is on for some reason. :)
as far as i know, the produced electrons in this CLINAC hit a target, resulting in a high-energy photon beam that is used for the treatment. thus, i guess my camera is recording scattered photons. :)

i’m quite glad he’s not being treated with protons, that’s for sure, that’d ruin my camera CCD. ;)
